What is Thermal Imaging?
Thermal imaging translates heat (thermal energy) into visible light. Electrical and mechanical equipment create heat, making them visible to thermal devices even in the dark. The thermal imaging inspection device assists in identifying any excessive energy sources (hot spots) which may be of concern regarding a potential fire risk.
Is a Thermal Image Inspection a Legal Requirement?
Thermal imaging is not a legal requirement and should not be used as a substitute for a full electrical inspection and test, however it can supplement a limited inspection already undertaken – for example, to mitigate the impact of a full inspection on a busy manufacturing business (24/7 operation), the duty holder may opt to choose a limited inspection (sample test) and supplement that inspection with a thermal image of all the visible electrical installation – minimising the impact on production whilst making reasonable efforts to prove the integrity of the installation.
When should Thermal Imaging Be Considered?
Thermal imaging should be considered for the following reasons:
- In conjunction with a limited electrical inspection and condition report (EICR)
- Signs of overheating
- Electrical distribution with limited access
- PPM of electrical motors and pumps
