What is involved in Portable Appliance Testing (PAT Testing)?
Portable Appliance Testing, also known as ‘PAT Testing’, is the testing and inspection process of any portable electrical equipment in accordance with the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 and the Electricity at Work Regulations 1989. Our highly qualified portable appliance testing engineers will carry out a visual examination of each piece of electrical equipment, as well as completing a series of electrical tests using a specialist PAT testing device. Typical electrical tests include an Earth Continuity Test, Insulation Test, and a Leakage Test. Other tests may also be carried out depending on the type of equipment being tested.
Is Portable Appliance Testing (PAT Testing) a Legal Requirement?
The Electricity at Work Regulations 1989 requires employers and building owners ‘to maintain electrical systems as far as is reasonably practicable to prevent danger’. In order to fulfil this legal requirement, guidelines can be found within British Standard 7671 (18th Edition, 2018). BS7671 makes it clear that portable appliance testing must be conducted in order to maintain electrical systems to prevent danger. Failure to comply with the British Standard or Electricity at Work Regulations can lead to hefty fines or even imprisonment
Employers, building owners, and equipment owners must be able to demonstrate compliance with BS 7671 (18th Edition) and this should include a system of recorded inspections and tests, undertaken by a ‘competent person’.
How often should Portable Appliance Testing (PAT Testing) be carried out?
The frequency of inspection and testing depends on the type of equipment, and the environment on which it is used in.
Typically, a Class 1 item would be inspected every 12 months, whereas a Class 2/IT item may be inspected every 24 months. The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) also provide guidance to assist in determining frequencies, however sometimes the guidance can be confusing.
Our team of industry experts and customer advisers can provide the best advice on how to demonstrate compliance with BS 7671 and the Electricity at Work Regulations 1989.
