Forklift Truck Training: Your Questions Answered

FAQs

Forklift Operators play a key role in the smooth running of business operations. Whether it be operating in  warehouses, distribution centres, factories, manufacturing sites, and ports etc.  Without Forklift Operators goods and deliveries would not be loaded, unloaded, moved or stored, and as result, the production of a business would slow down considerably or even stop altogether.

There is no single answer for this as the job requirements may differ from company to company. Typically speaking, a Forklift Truck Operator must have a relevant training qualification and certificate to demonstrate and evidence competency with operating a Forklift Truck safely and effectively, and in accordance with industry guidance. Understanding how a forklift truck operates and awareness of health and safety are usually key requirements.

To be able to operate a forklift, most people will say that a forklift licence is required. Technically however, there is no such thing as a forklift ‘licence’ but a lot of the time it is commonly referred to as that. In actual fact, when you are qualified you will receive a Certificate to show to your employer. Some people simply call the Certificate a Licence.

This may come as a surprise, but there is no such thing as an official Forklift ‘Licence’. When you are successfully complete and pass your training course, you will receive a ‘Certificate’ to show to your employer. Some people simply call the Certificate a Licence.

You don’t need to hold a UK driving licence to operate a forklift truck and there is no legal requirement to do so, unless you also wish to drive the forklift on a public road.

Anyone aged 18 or more can learn to operate a forklift truck. (no driving licence is required)

In 2025, the average hourly rate for a Forklift Truck Operator was £14.29 according to Indeed.co.uk. For the latest average hourly rate, then please visit the Indeed.co.uk website by clicking here.

The price you pay will be determined by type of training course that you require (i.e. Novice, Refresher, Experienced Worker Assessment). The duration of the training course will typically be 1 to 5 days, depending on your experience. This will also determine the final price for the training course.
