Ensure your Vehicle Lifts are compliant, certified, and safe to use in accordance with LOLER 1998 and PUWER 1998
Ensure your Vehicle Lifts are compliant, certified, and safe to use in accordance with LOLER 1998 and PUWER 1998
Vehicle lifts are essential in garages, workshops, MOT centres, fleet depots, and transport facilities, allowing safe access to the underside of cars, vans, lorries, and buses. Because they raise heavy loads, and often people, they are legally classed as lifting equipment and must be regularly inspected to ensure safety and compliance.
Plant and Safety provide professional vehicle lift LOLER and PUWER inspections and thorough examinations to ensure your garage equipment remains safe, compliant, and legally certified. Our inspection and thorough examination services for vehicle lifts help businesses meet vehicle lift requirements defined by LOLER 1998 and PUWER 1998 regulations and protect technicians working beneath raised vehicles.

We provide inspections and thorough examinations on include, but not limited to; vehicle lifts, direct acting hydraulic in-ground vehicle lifts, mobile column lifts (single post hydraulic), mobile column lifts (single post screw/recirculating ball), four post vehicle lifts (hydraulic wire rope), four post vehicle lifts (screw type), six and eight post vehicle lifts, two post vehicle lifts (hydraulic chain/wire rope), two post vehicle lifts (screw type), and scissor vehicle lifts.
A vehicle lift is a mechanical device designed to raise land-based vehicles completely off the ground so work can be carried out safely on or underneath them.
They may be:
› Fixed or stationary lifts
› Mobile or movable units
› Single, two-post, or four-post lifts

Each lift consists of a load-carrying platform supported and guided by a structural frame and powered lifting system. Many are used daily in busy workshops, making regular inspection essential to prevent failure and accidents.
Vehicle lifts are covered by two key pieces of legislation. Guidance from the Health and Safety Executive confirms that lifting equipment and workplace equipment must be regularly inspected and maintained to protect people from risk
Under LOLER, duty holders must ensure that:
› Lifting equipment is strong, stable, and suitable for its intended use
› Equipment is positioned and installed safely
› It is thoroughly examined by a competent person at regular intervals
› Defects are identified and addressed promptly
In most workshop environments, vehicle lifts require a thorough examination every 6 months, as determined by a competent person, due to the risk to individuals working below the load.

In accordance with the Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations (LOLER 1998) and BS 7980:2024 Vehicle lifts. Installation, maintenance, thorough examination and safe use. Code of practice , vehicle lifts must undergo a thorough examination at least every 6 months.
Although LOLER generally requires a 12 month examination for lifting equipment that only raises loads, vehicle lifts are inspected and thorough examined more frequently because they are used in situations where people work directly beneath the lifted vehicle.
This applies to 2-post, 4-post, and scissor lifts, as well as mobile/trolley jacks used for lifting vehicles.
Our engineers meet the Competent Person criteria set out in LOLER 1998 and PUWER 1998.
Our dedicated national engineering team, and our centralised planning team are available to cover all industrial door types on all sites across the UK.
Demonstrate compliance with Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations (LOLER 1998) and Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations (PUWER 1998)
