What is an LEV?

Under the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations 2002 (COSHH), it is an employer’s responsibility to ensure that their staff are not exposed to dangerous airborne contaminants.

Local exhaust ventilation is an extract ventilation system that takes airborne contaminants such as dusts, mists, gases, vapour or fumes out of the workplace air so that they can’t be breathed in.

Properly designed LEV will:

Collect the air that contains the contaminants
Make sure they are contained and taken away from people
clean the air (if necessary) and get rid of the contaminants safely

LEV Testing and Inspection Frequency

It is a legal requirement, as set out in the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974, for any employer to maintain working conditions for employees.

For LEV systems to work effectively, they must be the right type, properly installed, used and maintained. This includes regular testing, with a maximum time of 14 months set down in the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations 2002, COSHH.
